Abstract:

This paper explores the relationship between profiting from innovation strategies, dominant positions and business ethics through the history of IBM. This company was the first dominant player in the IT world, foreshadowing some of the issues raised by today's GAFAMs. This analysis highlights the complex nature of the interactions between these three dimensions, which can be highly antagonistic, but can also be mutually reinforcing, sometimes resulting in paradoxical effects, or at least in results very different from the original aims.
