Abstract:
Innovation and tradition seem at first sight to be two antagonistic terms. A number of works in innovation management, although not directly concerned with the concept of tradition, do point in this direction, emphasising the importance of new knowledge and the myopic effects that can result from the entrenchment of frameworks of thought and organisational routines. However, a number of studies criticise this bias in favour of recent knowledge and show that an old knowledge base can also lead to innovation.
This paper proposes an integrative model aimed at reconciling these two approaches. The core of our proposal is that these relationships do not cancel each other out and can therefore be present simultaneously. It is no longer a question of knowing whether relations of opposition prevail over relations of complementarity, but rather of better understanding how the latter are articulated. We propose a first step in this direction by showing that these opposing relationships are based on a certain number of common factors. The result is an analytical framework that can inform in-depth empirical investigations, which are still necessary at this stage.
