Abstract:
This article studies the actions taken by innovative companies to influence the institutional and regulatory context. By its very nature, innovation is confronted with an unsuitable or even restrictive institutional environment. How, then, do innovative companies manage to change this environment in a way that is favourable to their innovations? This article is divided into two parts. The first part proposes a theoretical framework for analysing the political or 'off-market' strategy of innovative companies. Six typical configurations are identified, based on the competitive impact of an innovation and the role of public policy in the diffusion of innovation. These six configurations lead to different influence strategies on the part of innovative companies. The second part develops hypotheses about the different forms and methods of influence that can be used by innovative companies. These hypotheses provide food for thought for future work in a field of research that has yet to be fully explored: the institutional dimension of innovation strategies.
