Abstract:
The aim of this article is to provide an in-depth analysis of the way in which patents can fuel the innovation process. The way in which patent information is managed, which is often left in the background compared with the strategies implemented by the company by filing patents, is thus placed at the heart of the analysis of an in-depth case study carried out in two stages. We have in fact combined two pieces of research carried out approximately three years apart in the same company, with different but partly overlapping issues, into a single case study. These two studies show congruently that the main potential roles of patents as inputs in the innovation process are well used, and provide us with details of how they are used. But they also show that they are far from being used to their full potential and provide a number of lessons about the obstacles to their use. We show that it is necessary to adopt a global approach to a company's patent management system, which is itself linked to its innovation process.
