Summary:
Patents are often summarised as a tool for defending inventions against imitation, either to retain the exclusivity of certain characteristics that are sources of differentiation for one's products, or to increase their financial value through the transfer of licences. In reality, it is a tool with multiple facets and also affects communication, cooperation with competitors, knowledge management and creativity. We propose to explore these different facets in greater depth and to deduce a number of implications for the management of a patent portfolio.
