Abstract:
Researchers are increasingly interested in patent strategies. In addition to its role in protecting against imitation, the patent has multiple roles, making it a tool that can potentially serve several types of strategy. This article seeks to deepen our understanding of the multiple uses of patents and their links with some of the levers of strategic management. It is based on empirical data from two empirical studies, one qualitative, based on 18 interviews with IP managers; the other quantitative, based on a questionnaire administered to managers in charge of patent issues within companies. Our results (provisional for the quantitative study) show the variety of roles and motives for filing patents. Above all, however, it shows that patent strategy choices (summarised here as an offensive vs defensive strategy dichotomy) influence certain organisational, operational and budgetary parameters.
