Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to present an analysis grid for industrial standards battles and to carry out an initial test of its relevance by studying the case of the battle between Sony's 'Blu-Ray' format and Toshiba's 'HD-DVD' format to replace the current DVD standard. The analysis grid is first presented in detail, focusing on its theoretical foundations. It is then applied to a case that is original in relation to the studies usually carried out on this subject: the battle is in progress. It is not, therefore, an a posteriori analysis of a competition whose outcome is known. Two issues that are usually dealt with separately are examined here simultaneously: the determining factors in a battle between two standards of the same generation, and the replacement of an existing standard.
