Corbel, P. ; Fernandez, F. and Gendraud, P. « Le budget comme relais de la stratégie : le cas du brevet », Proceedings of the 16th International Conference of the AIMS (Association Internationale de Management Stratégique), Montréal, June 2007
Abstract:
The budget is generally considered to be one of the classic relays for corporate strategy at operational level. This article examines the potential links between the strategic goals assigned to patents in a company and the budget allocated to managing its patent portfolio. First, an overview of the main roles of patents is presented. It is based on a review of the specialist academic literature and on semi-directive interviews with industrial property professionals. A set of proposals then draws links between these different roles and the breakdown of the patent budget into its three main components: filings, foreign extensions and maintenance fees. The ensuing discussion looks at both the managerial implications of such a line of reasoning and its possible extensions into research.
